Alberto Fujimori, former president of Peru, died at the age of 86, after facing a delicate state of health that had him bedridden at the home of his daughter, the former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori.
It was his own daughter who confirmed his death through social networksindicating that “After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just departed to meet the Lord. We ask those who appreciated him to join us in praying for the eternal rest of his soul.
“Thank you for so much, Dad!”
According to RPP, lAlberto Fujimori, who was in power between 1990 and 2000, made his last public appearance on September 4, when he was caught leaving the Delgado Clinic, after undergoing a series of tests.
On that occasion, Keiko Fujimori explained that her father came to the premises to have “a CT scan and see how his condition is progressing,” in addition to avoiding confirming whether the politician will run in the 2026 presidential elections.
For his part, Congressman Alejandro Aguinaga, who was also the former president’s primary physician, visited him in the last few hours at his home, explaining that “The president is fighting (…) Given the current situation and the information (regarding his health), we ask that visits be restricted and we reiterate our gratitude.”
Alberto Fujimori left the Barbadillo prison last December, where he was serving a 25-year sentence for the La Cantuta and Barrios Altos cases, after the Constitutional Court reinstated the humanitarian pardon that Pedro Pablo Kuczynski had granted him.
Meanwhile, months later, Keiko Fujimori announced that her father would be Fuerza Popular’s presidential candidate in the 2026 elections.
