Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo arrived in Lima this Sunday to be extradited by the United States to be prosecuted for corruption and money laundering in the framework of the mega-scandal of bribes paid by the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

Toledo, 77, arrived in the Peruvian capital on a flight from Los Angeles and in the custody of Interpol agents. At the international airport, Jorge Chávez was received by prosecutors and police, according to images broadcast by television stations.

He is accused of having received millions of dollars from Odebrecht in exchange for public works tenders. Prosecutors ask for 20 years and six months in prison.

The former president, who ruled between 2001 and 2006, turned himself in at the request of a judge Friday morning in a federal court in San Jose, California, for the final phase of the extradition process.

Once in the hands of the Peruvian authorities, Toledo will undergo a legal medical examination and judicial control by a judge. Later, he will be transferred to the Barbadillo prison, within the headquarters of the Directorate of Special Police Operations (Diroes), where former presidents Pedro Castillo (2021-2022) and Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) are also being held.

Toledo was arrested in 2019 in the United States, where he resided after having worked at Stanford University. Initially, he was jailed, but in 2020 he was placed under house arrest with the obligation to wear an electronic anklet.
