Former President Bolsonaro pledges to “respect the Constitution” after his defeat

by time news

In a tense context, his word was eagerly awaited. Jair Bolsonaro pledged to “respect the Constitution”, without however explicitly acknowledging his defeat in the presidential election in Brazil. He spoke during a speech of a few minutes at the presidential palace of Alvorada, in Brasilia, during which he did not congratulate Lula for his victory.

“The president authorized me, according to the law, to start the transition process” with the team of elected president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, said his chief of staff Ciro Nogueira.

“Peaceful demonstrations will always be welcome”

Jair Bolsonaro, 67, also condemned the roadblocks erected by his supporters protesting against the victory since Sunday. “Peaceful protests will always be welcome, but we cannot use the methods of the left, (…) which prevent freedom of movement,” he added.

However, he said the protests were “the result of outrage and a sense of injustice” over the electoral process. The former president has always remained silent since the announcement on Sunday evening of the victory over the wire of the icon of the left Lula (50.9% against 49.1%). But the Brazilian press was buzzing with unconfirmed information about a statement before the end of the day.
