New York: Writer E. A New York court on Friday ordered former President Donald Trump to pay Jeanne Carroll $83.3 million after she was found guilty of a second defamation lawsuit filed by her. An additional $65 million in fines and an $18 million defamation penalty. Adding the $5 million awarded to Carroll in the first case, Trump will pay Carroll a total of $88.3 million.
She accused Carroll, 80, of tarnishing her reputation when she told him she was lying when she was accused of raping her in 1990.
The verdict was handed down Friday by a jury of seven men and two women in the trial, which Trump regularly attends. Trump said he would appeal the “absolutely ridiculous” ruling.
Carroll filed two defamation lawsuits in 2019 and 2022 over comments made by Trump. In May 2023, a jury found Trump liable for defamation and sexual misconduct in Carolyn’s first trial. Carol was awarded $5 million.
Before the second trial, the judge ruled that Carroll’s statements about the attack were true and that Trump’s statements, which he denied, were defamatory. The jury’s only task was to decide what damages Carroll should receive.
The court’s blow comes after Trump’s victory in the New Hampshire Republican primary.
Carol smiled as the verdict was read. Later in the statement she gave, it was pointed out that this is a victory for every oppressed woman.
Earlier, the former president who left the court during Carroll’s closing statement responded on his Truth social media. He later returned while his lawyer was speaking.
The court was already tense. US District Judge Lewis Kaplan warned Trump’s lawyers that they would have to be locked up when they tried to present a slide show in defiance of the court.
On Thursday, Trump said: “I don’t know who this woman is. I’ve never met her. I’ve never been on trial.”
