Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is returning to Sri Lanka from Singapore, said Sri Lankan Cabinet Spokesperson Bandula Gunawardena, reports PTI.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who were responsible for Sri Lanka’s economic decline, stepped down after popular protests intensified. As the people’s protest intensified on the 9th, Gotabaya Rajapaksa escaped with his family from Sri Lanka to the Maldives on the 13th.

From Maldives, Gotabaya Rajapak left for Singapore. It was first reported that he had received asylum from the Singapore government. The Singaporean government denied this and issued a 14-day visa to Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Reporters asked Sri Lankan Cabinet Spokesperson Gunawardhana about this. He replied, “Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not hiding in any country. We expect him to come from Singapore.
I do not believe that Gotabaya Rajapak escaped from Sri Lanka and is living in hiding. We do not know the details of when Rajapaksa will come.” He said.

Gunawardhana replied to the question whether the former President Gotabaya will be arrested and said, “If there is any such situation, the responsible authorities of the country will take steps to ensure that the former President is not in any danger.”
