Former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter Attend the Plains Peanut Festival

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, were spotted enjoying the Plains Peanut Festival in Plains, Georgia, ahead of President Carter’s 99th birthday. The Carter Center shared a social media post showcasing the couple riding in an SUV down a street filled with festival-goers. The Carter Center tweeted, “Beautiful day for President & Mrs. Carter to enjoy a ride through the Plains Peanut Festival! And just a week before he turns 99. We’re betting peanut butter ice cream is on the menu for lunch! #JimmyCarter99.”

Despite facing health challenges in recent years, including a battle with brain cancer in 2015 and undergoing surgery to relieve brain pressure in 2019, President Carter’s grandson, Josh Carter, stated in an interview with People that “It’s clear we’re in the final chapter.” However, President Carter’s family and caregivers have been providing support and are the only recent visitors to their Plains home.

Rosalynn Carter, who has dementia, is still aware of her diagnosis and recognizes her family, according to Josh Carter. The Carters, who have been married for 77 years, hold the record for being the longest-married presidential couple. President Carter, originally from Plains, Georgia, and a former peanut farmer and Navy lieutenant, served as Georgia’s governor and was president from 1977 to 1981.

As President Carter approaches his 99th birthday on October 1, the public continues to celebrate his legacy and contributions to the country.
