CNN: Jimmy Carter’s Grandson Says Former President Is in “Final Chapter”

The grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, recently spoke out about the former president’s health. In an interview with People magazine, the grandson, Josh Carter, stated that “it’s clear we’re in the final chapter” for his grandfather.

Jimmy Carter, who is 98 years old, entered hospice care in February. While he beat brain cancer in 2015, he has faced various health scares in recent years and underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain in 2019.

According to Josh Carter, family and caregivers have been the only recent visitors to the Carters’ Georgia home. However, he reassured that “there’s always somebody at the house” to keep his grandparents company.

CNN reached out to The Carter Center for comment but did not receive a response.

Despite his health challenges, Josh Carter described his grandfather as “still fully Jimmy Carter” and mentioned that he still understands and appreciates the well wishes and love he receives.

In regards to Rosalynn Carter, who has dementia, Josh Carter revealed that his grandmother is aware of her diagnosis and even gave approval for the May press release announcing it. He also pointed out that she still recognizes the family and is able to form new memories.

Although seeing his wife lose some of her memories must be difficult for Jimmy Carter, Josh Carter mentioned that they have experienced everything together and that “the beautiful thing is that they are still together.” He also added that they continue to hold hands, which he finds amazing.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have been married for 77 years, making them the longest-married presidential couple. Throughout their post-presidency years, they have redefined the role of former first families. Jimmy Carter founded The Carter Center alongside his wife, focusing on advancing world peace and health. The center has worked on various initiatives, such as monitoring foreign elections and reducing diseases in developing countries.

Aside from his work with The Carter Center, Jimmy Carter has been a longtime volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote peace globally. Before his political career, he was a peanut farmer and served as a US Navy lieutenant. As a Democrat, he served one term as the governor of Georgia and was the president of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

While Jimmy Carter’s health may be entering its final chapter, his impact and legacy will continue to be remembered and celebrated.
