Sri Lanka’s former President Gotabaya Rajapakse, who was in exile abroad for the past 2 months, returned to Colombo from Thailand early this morning.
Agitated by the economic deterioration in Sri Lanka, the people staged a series of protests against President Gotabaya Rajapakse. After the people’s protest intensified, he left Sri Lanka for Maldives on July 13.

Gotabaya Rajapakse went to Singapore from there. Gotabaya Rajapaksa also resigned from his presidency while in Singapore. Rajapakse stayed in the country for only 28 days and went to Thailand from there.
The Thai government had issued a visa to Gotabaya Rajapaksa for 90 days. However, Gothapaya was locked up in a one-star hotel in Bangkok under heavy security.
Thailand had categorically declared that Gotabaya Rajapakse should not engage in any political activities during his stay in Thailand. Due to this, Gotabaya Rajapakse, who did not want to live like a prisoner, returned to Colombo last night.

The Government of Sri Lanka had made the necessary arrangements for Gotabaya Rajapakse to come to Colombo. Strict security measures were also in place.
Subsequently, Gotabaya Rajapakse arrived at Colombo Bandaranaike Airport at midnight. Many important executives, ministers and MPs from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Party came to welcome Gotabaya Rajapakse.
The government has formed a special security force comprising the army and the police to ensure that Gotabaya Rajapaksa does not face any security lapses.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa returned to Colombo on a Singapore Airlines flight from Thailand to Singapore. There are no direct flights from Thailand to Colombo. Due to this, Gothapaya who went to Singapore from Thailand came to Colombo from there

Heavy security arrangements have been made for Gotabaya Rajapakse, who is staying at the Government House in Colombo. Various facilities are also provided.
