Former Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland has been a member of the Oslo City Council as the election last autumn.
She is now requesting an exemption for “health reasons.”
The 85-year-old is seeking exemption for the remainder of the electoral term, meaning she wishes to step down from the council until 2027.
The application will be processed by the council’s business committee on monday, writes NRK, wich first reported the matter.

The director of the council’s secretariat, Lars Arne Ryssdal, writes in his recommendation that the requirements of the Municipal Act for obtaining an exemption are met and recommends that the application be granted.
She was placed 65th and last on the election list, but received so many personal votes that she secured a permanent position in the city council.
This summer, her husband, Arne Olav Brundtland, passed away at the age of 87.

Brundtland was Norway’s first female prime minister, serving three terms in 1981, 1986–89, and 1990–96. Before this, she was Minister of Surroundings from 1974 to 1979. From 1997 to 2003, she was the Director-General of the World Health Association (WHO).
In 2007, she became the UN’s special envoy for climate issues and is a member of The Elders, a group of elder statespersons and prominent leaders working to solve global problems.
Gro Harlem Brundtland was the main guest at AUF’s summer camp on Utøya on July 22, 2011. When she arrived on the island that day, she was greeted like a pop star by the youth. A few hours later, the mass murderer and terrorist Anders Behring Breivik arrived. His primary target was to kill Brundtland, but she had already left the island.
