Former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda (67) was elected as the new leader of Japan’s main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party.

Representative Noda was elected as the new representative at the Constitutional Democratic Party’s extraordinary convention held in Tokyo on the 23rd, defeating former Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano and former representative Kenta Izumi.

Representative Noda graduated from Waseda University’s Department of Political Science and Economics and entered the first class of the famous Japanese political school, Matsushita Institute of Politics and Economics. He entered central politics in 1993 when he was elected to the House of Representatives (lower house) as a member of the Japan New Party, and is currently in his 9th term. He served as Finance Minister during the Democratic Party of Japan government and as Prime Minister from September 2011 to December 2012. He is the last Prime Minister of the Democratic Party of Japan government.

During his time as prime minister, his relationship with Korea was not good. He blushed at the issue of comfort women during the summit with former President Lee Myung-bak held in Kyoto in December 2011. Korea-Japan relations rapidly deteriorated as he did not respond much to former President Lee’s strong request to resolve the comfort women issue.

Representative Noda is faced with the task of running in the general election as an opposition party candidate against the new president (prime minister) of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, who will be elected on the 27th of this month. In Japanese political circles, there is an outlook that the new prime minister will dissolve the Diet (House of Representatives) immediately after taking office and hold a general election as early as October. According to major media polls, the approval rating of the Constitutional Democratic Party is less than half that of the Liberal Democratic Party.
