ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Raja Pervais Ashraf has been unanimously elected as the new Speaker of Parliament in neighboring Pakistan.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan has stepped down as prime minister amid recent political unrest in Pakistan. Following the resolution, Shebaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was elected prime minister in a coalition formed by the opposition.

His party did worse than expected from opinion polls, which saw them at gaining about two thirds of the support of Imran Khan. Following this, the election to elect a new Speaker took place yesterday. The Pakistan People’s Party, which is currently in the ruling coalition, has been given the post of Speaker.

Former Prime Minister Raja Pervais Ashraf has been fielded as the party’s candidate. Since no one else filed the petition, he was unanimously elected. Ashraf was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from June 22, 2012 to March 16, 2013. Meanwhile, the ruling coalition decided to file a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan’s Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri.

Following this, he resigned from his post yesterday. Members of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party severely beat Deputy Speaker Mohammad Mazari and dragged him down. They joined the opposition and accused the deputy speaker of taking revenge on them.
