Former Rockstar Games Developer Reveals Secrets of “Grand Theft Auto” Series
A former Rockstar Games developer recently started sharing various development secrets with players on his personal blog, but soon after, all the posts were removed at the request of Rockstar officials.
Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar Games, began blogging on November 11 about his experiences working at Rockstar North, the studio behind the Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and other classic game series. Several of Vermeij’s posts revealed secrets about the early development of the Grand Theft Auto series and other Rockstar Games titles, sparking discussion among fans and industry insiders.
One revelation detailed the original concept for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City as a zombie shooting survival game, as well as the cancellation of the highly anticipated “AGENT” game. Vermeij also shared insights into the development of Grand Theft Auto 4 and the creative process behind shaping the game world.
However, Rockstar North officials were not pleased with the behind-the-scenes revelations and asked Vermeij to remove the content from his blog. In a statement, Vermeij acknowledged receiving an email from Rockstar North expressing dissatisfaction with the content and feeling that it had revealed too many company secrets, ultimately leading to the removal of the articles.
While Vermeij clarified that Rockstar Games did not directly force him to remove the content, he emphasized the company’s secretive nature when it comes to internal game development. Rockstar Games and its founder, Sam Houser, have been notoriously private about their game plans and rarely discuss internal development secrets.
This news comes amid rumors of high-pressure working environments at Rockstar Games, particularly during the development of “Red Dead Redemption 2”. However, recent reports suggest that the company has made significant improvements to its working culture and is allowing employees to develop the team’s next new game in a more relaxed way.
As Rockstar Games approaches its 25th anniversary, the team announced that they will reveal the long-awaited new game in the Grand Theft Auto series in early December, building anticipation among fans and the gaming community.
