Former South Africa rugby captain Theuns Stofberg died on Wednesday aged 68 after being involved in a road accident the previous day, the South African Rugby Federation announced. Stofberg had played 21 Test matches including 4 as captain between 1976 and 1984, scoring 6 tries in total.

He made his debut for the Springboks in 1976 in Bloemfontein against New Zealand and featured in all four victories on a 1980 tour between the South Africans and the British and Irish Lions.

«To say that Theuns left an indelible mark on South African rugby at a difficult time for our sport is saying something.“, underlined the president of the federation Mark Alexander in a press release. It refers to the anti-apartheid demonstrations sparked by Springbok matches when the national team was made up of only white players until 1981 because of the apartheid regime imposed by the South African government.
