Former Sri Lanka U-19 Cricket Captain Dhammika Niroshana Shot Dead in Own Home: Police Investigation Underway

Colombo: Former Sri Lanka Under-19 cricket team captain Dhammika Niroshana shot dead at home. The incident took place at his own residence in Kanda Mawata, Ambalangoda on Tuesday night. He was killed in front of his wife and two children. The media reported that the attacker opened fire with a gun with 12 borers. After receiving the information, the police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. Police said an investigation has also begun and no information has been received about a motive for the shooting or a suspect. Right-handed fast bowler and batsman Dhammika Niroshana made his debut for Sri Lankan U-19 team in 2000. He captained the U-19 team which included former Sri Lankan players Farvez Mahroof, Angelo Mathews and Upul Tharanga. Despite being called the future promise of the Lankan team, he had had enough of cricket at the age of 20 and surprised his fans. The star’s last match was in 2004. He played 12 First Class matches and 8 List A matches for Galle Cricket Club between 2001-2004.

He captained Sri Lanka in the 2002 ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand and took seven wickets in five innings at an average of 19.28. With Chilaw Marians Cricket Club, Galle Cricket Club and Singa Sports Club in Sri Lanka, Dhammika Niroshana has collected over 200 runs and 19 wickets in 12 first-class matches and 48 runs and five wickets in eight ListA matches.
