Former deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Alexei Burnashov became a defendant in a criminal case on the use of violence against a police officer. This was the result of a conflict with the traffic police in July this year, when inspectors stopped Mr. Burnashov’s car. A video was leaked on the Internet in which Aleksey Burnashov swore obscenely at the police. The case was initiated after the expiration of the term of office of Mr. Burnashov, when he lost his immunity. Sources claim that the security forces have not yet made a final decision to initiate a case for insulting Interior Ministry employees. It was not possible to get a comment from the ex-deputy.
The investigating authorities are investigating a criminal case against the former deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Alexei Burnashov. This was reported by Novosti Perm with reference to the ICR’s response to a journalistic request. The ex-deputy is charged with Part 1 of Art. 318 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (use of violence against a government official, up to five years in prison). According to Kommersant’s information, it is being processed by the first department for the investigation of especially important criminal cases of the Investigative Department of the TFR in the Perm Territory.
In the field of view of the investigation, Mr. Burnashov came after July 8 came into conflict with the traffic police inspectors. They stopped the Mercedes driven by Alexey Burnashov, as they suspected that the driver was drunk. Earlier, Kommersant’s sources said that after that Alexei Burnashov tried to escape, and when one of the police caught up with him, the deputy punched him in the face. After his actions were stopped by other police officers, Mr. Burnashov, as follows from the video released in the media, began to insult them, including obscene ones. Also, the deputy said right at the scene that the employees were extorting money from him and he was ready to lay down his “deputy”. At the same time, he did not show the certificate of the people’s choice.
Alexei Burnashov was taken to the nearest police department, and then to the investigation department, where he was interrogated as part of the inspection material on the use of violence against a police officer and insulting the authorities (Article 319 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Investigators seized the video recordings made by the Interior Ministry officers, as well as Mr. Burnashov’s car. He tried to appeal against the seizure of the car in court, but in the end the application was left without consideration. According to several interlocutors, by that time the car had already been returned to him.
In late August, the MP wrote an apology post on Facebook. He said that he deeply regrets what happened and apologized to the traffic police officers and witnesses to the conflict.
As suggested by Kommersant’s sources, the criminal case against Alexei Burnashov was initiated only after his powers expired and he lost his immunity. He did not run for the September elections. Sources also claim that the issue of bringing Alexei Burnashov to criminal responsibility for insulting government officials allegedly “has not yet been finally resolved.”
It was not possible to get comments from Mr. Burnashov himself. The person who answered the call on the well-known telephone number said that this number did not belong to Alexei Burnashov.
