The contract period is 1 year and 6 months, until the 2026 North and Central America World Cup.
England’s third foreign coach in history
German coach Thomas Tuchel, who coached Kim Min-jae at Bayern Munich (Germany) until last May, is expected to take over as head coach of the England national team.
The British BBC reported on the 16th (Korean time) that “Coach Tuchel has agreed to take over as the next head coach of the England national team,” and that “the England Football Association (FA) will officially announce the appointment of coach Tuchel on the 16th (local time).”
If coach Tuchel takes over as England’s coach, he will become the third foreign coach to lead England, the ‘home of soccer,’ following coaches Sven-Göran Eriksson (2001-2006, Sweden) and Fabio Capello (2008-2010, Italy).
England’s head coach is vacant as Gareth Southgate, who led the team for eight years since 2016, stepped down after the UEFA Euro 2024 in July.
Coach Southgate achieved significant results, including semifinals at the 2018 Russian World Cup and runners-up at Euro 2020 and 2024, but was criticized for poor performance and eventually resigned from the baton.
Afterwards, England is playing the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League (UNL) under acting manager Lee Carsley.
Coach Tuchel is expected to lead England in earnest starting next year. The BBC said, “Acting coach Carsley will take charge until the UNL match against Greece and Ireland in November. After that, Coach Tuchel will officially lead the team.”
His contract period is reportedly 1 year and 6 months, until the 2026 FIFA North and Central America World Cup finals.
Coach Tuchel has achieved great success since 2009 by leading Mainz, Dortmund (Germany), Paris Saint-Germain (PSG, France), Chelsea (England), and Bayern Munich.
At PSG, he led the team to second place in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) in the 2019-20 season, and at Chelsea, he won the UCL, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup in the 2020-21 season.
Coach Tuchel resigned with one year left on his contract after Bayern Munich failed to win the Bundesliga last season. Afterwards, he was mentioned as a candidate for the next manager of Manchester United, but returned to the scene as the head coach of the England national team.
