A soldier who defected to North Korea without permission just before being repatriated after receiving disciplinary action while serving in the US military in Korea has been sentenced to prison by a US court.

However, it is reported that he was released immediately considering the period of detention prior to the trial.

According to the BBC and other British public broadcasters on the 21st (local time), the military court at Fort Bliss in Texas sentenced US Army Private Travis King (24), who was charged with desertion and assaulting a non-commissioned officer, to one year in prison.

Private King was originally charged with a total of 14 counts, including this one, but the rest were ultimately dismissed after he pleaded guilty to five counts, including desertion, assault on a non-commissioned officer, and three counts of disobeying a superior officer.

In particular, the court reportedly released King after taking into account the length of time he had been detained at Fort Bliss and his exemplary behavior as a soldier.

“In accordance with the terms of the plea deal, the judge sentenced Private King to one year in prison, a demotion to the rank of Private (E-1), forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and a dishonorable discharge,” Rosenblatt, King’s attorney, said in a statement.

He added, “Considering Private King’s long term detention and good behavior, he will now be free to return home.”

Private King was charged with crossing the Military Demarcation Line to North Korea without permission on July 17th of last year while serving in the US military in Korea.

At the time, Private King got into a fight while drunk at a bar in Korea, was disciplined and imprisoned. He was later transported to the airport for repatriation to the United States, but instead of boarding the plane, he suddenly ran away.

The next day, Private King participated in a tour of the Joint Security Area (JSA) and crossed the Military Demarcation Line without permission to North Korea. North Korea, which detained Private King, claimed that he had “escaped abuse and racial discrimination within the U.S. military.”

Then, after investigating Private King, North Korea announced its intention to release him through Sweden in September of last year, and expelled him across the Chinese border on the 27th of that month.

Upon his return to the United States, Private King was immediately detained at Fort Bliss and brought to trial on charges of desertion, possession of child pornography, assaulting fellow soldiers, disobeying orders from superiors, illegal possession of alcohol, making false statements, and assaulting a police officer.

During the trial, Private King also stated that he had been dissatisfied with his job while serving as a U.S. soldier in Korea and that he had been thinking about deserting for a year before defecting to North Korea.
