Microsoft Resolves Windows 11 BSOD Issue Caused by Easy Anti-Cheat

A recent update from Microsoft has eliminated a frustrating bug that caused the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) for Windows 11 users playing games utilizing Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC).

Gamers experiencing frequent and unexpected crashes on Windows 11, particularly while playing titles that employ Easy Anti-Cheat, may finally have a solution. Microsoft confirmed it had identified and addressed a bug in Windows 11 24H2 that was triggering the dreaded BSOD. The issue, which initially surfaced after the 24H2 release, proved elusive, requiring collaboration with Epic Games to resolve.

According to a company release, Microsoft initially implemented a “safeguard hold” to prevent devices with Easy Anti-Cheat installed from upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, effectively pausing updates for affected users until a fix could be deployed. This measure aimed to minimize disruption while developers worked on a solution.

Fortunately, as of July 24, 2025, Microsoft announced the removal of this safeguard hold. “Eligible devices without other safeguard holds can install Windows 11, version 24H2 via Windows Update,” the company stated on its Windows 11 known issues page. However, users may encounter a warning indicating an incompatible version of Easy Anti-Cheat is installed.

The resolution process may require users to update Easy Anti-Cheat by launching and frequently playing their games, as update availability is dependent on the individual game publisher. A confirmation prompt will appear during the Windows installation process.

If you’ve been experiencing BSODs while gaming on Windows 11 and utilize Easy Anti-Cheat, updating both your operating system and the anti-cheat software is now recommended. Microsoft believes this update should resolve the underlying issue and restore a stable gaming experience.

For those who paused their gaming activities while Microsoft addressed this bug, there have been notable developments in popular titles like Fortnite. One writer recently argued that Fortnite’s new Blitz Royale mode is “the most fun shooter in years,” and another spent an impressive 100 hours recreating their high school within the game.
