Epic Games Introduces First-Person Modes in Fortnite with New Tactical Shooter
Epic Games is set to allow Fortnite creators to publish experiences featuring first-person gameplay. To showcase the potential of this new feature, Epic is launching “Ballistic,” a tactical FPS shooter that resembles popular titles like Counter-strike and Valorant.
the new game mode, described as “an adrenaline-filled, round-based 5v5 competitive experience where strategy, tactical teamwork, and individual skill are vital for success,” is detailed in an Epic blog post. In Ballistic, players will be divided into two teams: one tasked with planting the bomb—referred to as the “Rift Point Device”—and the other focused on defending against it.Teams will have opportunities to purchase gear each round, switch sides after six rounds, and the first team to win seven rounds will achieve victory.
Epic has a history of integrating elements from other accomplished games into fortnite. For example, its racing mode draws inspiration from Psyonix’s Rocket League and the festival mode takes cues from Harmonix’s Rock band. The Lego survival mode shows similarities to Minecraft, and the now-retired Impostors mode was influenced by Among Us. Interestingly, the game’s primary battle royale mode originated as a response to the success of PUBG.
With Epic’s shift towards making Fortnite more like Roblox, players are encouraged to explore various experiences beyond the core game. Modes like Ballistic and Reload allow Epic to experiment with different gameplay concepts while maintaining the integrity of the battle royale experience. Additionally, as purchasable Fortnite outfits and gear are compatible across modes, there is a financial incentive for Epic to expand the roster of game experiences.
The early access for Ballistic launches on December 11th, coinciding with the day Fortnite creators will be able to publish their own experiences featuring first-person modes that same day.
How could teh first-person mode impact Fortnite’s competitive scene and player strategies?
