“Forward with the Greens and Liberals”

by time news

Time.news – The Berlin power seismographs had widely foretold it, but for Armin Laschet it remains a hard blow: Olaf Scholz’s SPD has collected the joint green light of Verdi and liberals to continue with a “three-way” negotiation with the hope of set up a ‘traffic light’ coalition.

Again it is the environmentalists who take the initiative in the game for a new government, freezing, for now, the other option on the table, namely a ‘Jamaica’ alliance led by the CDU / CSU of Laschet. “After bilateral talks with the other parties, we have decided to propose to the Social Democrats and Liberals to go forward together,” he said the ‘number one’ of the Greens Annalena Baerbock in front of the reporters in the Bundestag foyer, alongside co-leader Robert Habeck.

A quick return of post came the answer, almost predictable judging by the ‘rumors’ on the eve, of the FDP leader Christian Lindner: “We have accepted the proposal of the Greens for three-way talks with the SPD”, the head said. of the liberals, this time in front of the cameras positioned inside his headquarters, the Hans Dietrich Genscher Haus.

“We reiterated that we will only enter a central government that reinforces values of freedom and advances the modernization of Germany”, insisted the leader of the liberals, who announced the first of these “three-way” confrontations tomorrow: “I already talked to Olaf Scholz ”, Lindner is keen to point out. Not even three hours later it was the turn of the candidate SPD chancellor who presented himself to the cameras.

What can happen now

“Tomorrow we leave,” Scholz announced with a smile. “The German citizens have given us the task of setting up a government, and the new polls show this too”, repeated the man currently in pole position to take the place occupied today by Angela Merkel.

“It is a question of creating an executive that is able to carry out the industrial and economic modernization of Germany and that accelerates the fight against climate change,” added the Social Democratic candidate, combining in a single sentence the arguments most dear to his liberal and Green partners.

Political reactions

Indeed, today’s statements by political leaders have been a sort of ballet of clarifications, aimed at opening a new chapter but also not closing any doors. Lindner was keen to underline that with CDU / CSU “there are more points in common” and that the ‘Jamaica’ option “would be the most natural for us in itself”. At the same time, “while seeing many things differently from the Greens”, the head of the FDP continues, “we have verified in these first comparisons that a friendly and confident path can be built to move forward”.

A kind of long-distance dialogue with environmentalists: while Baerbock did not fail to concede that the acceleration is due to the fact that “this country cannot afford to drag the government game long”, he reiterated that the three are making an effort to “speak not only of what divides but also but also of the points in common”. At his side it was Habeck who specified that this “does not yet mean a complete renunciation” of a possible ‘Jamaica’ coalition ”.

On the other hand, the climate is very different and perhaps even a little confused, although Laschet does not give up: he too has called the cameras, to say that he is “still willing to further talks with Verdi and Fdp”. he expressed himself the Minister of Health, Jens Spahn, according to which also “the Jamaica coalition deserves a chance”, because, despite the Union’s poor electoral results, “it would help to solve many social issues”.

But the reaction of Markus Soeder, head of Christian-socialists, already a challenger of Laschet himself in the race to obtain the CDU / Csu candidacy for the chancellery is quite different: “There probably won’t be a Union-led government in Germany,” he said shortly. “Today is a signal that must be accepted, at this moment the ‘traffic light’ coalition is clearly ‘number one’.” The deep throats say that at the CDU headquarters, the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus, they did not take well the release of the CDU chief The Bild synthesis is emblematic: “Soeder buries Laschet’s Jamaican dreams”.

What the polls say

Even the post-electoral polls seem to push in the direction of ‘traffic lights’: the Forsa institute has certified the collapse of the CDU / Csu Union, which yields another 4.1 points up to 20%, increasing the gap towards Scholz’s social democrats , which recorded a further advance at 26%.

The Greens of Baerbock and Habeck also increased, at 16%, while a more substantial leap was recorded by the liberals of the FDP, who advanced by 2.5 points to 14%. As mentioned, the appointment is for tomorrow: Scholz, Lindner and Baerbock, with their delegations attached, have scheduled a first meeting of at least six hours for tomorrow: arguments certainly are not lacking.
