Romanian Parents Receive Suspended Sentence in Nantes Child Abduction and Abuse Case

A Romanian couple has been handed a two-year suspended prison sentence by a court in Nantes, France, for child abuse and child abduction, stemming from a harrowing case dating back to 2018. The case, initially reported by West France, involved a prematurely born baby hospitalized with unexplained injuries and a subsequent attempt by the parents to remove the child from foster care.

A premature baby born in Nantes, in the Loire-Atlantique region of France, was admitted to the hospital emergency room several months after his birth, exhibiting significant bruising and multiple fractures. Authorities launched an investigation, and when questioned, the parents claimed to have no knowledge of how their infant son sustained the injuries. Crucially, investigators determined the child had no contact with anyone outside of his immediate family.

Placement and Removal

Following the unexplained injuries, the child was placed in a foster family to ensure his safety. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when the parents, after several months of visitation, returned with the assistance of a Belgian driver to reclaim their son.

“The parents visited their baby… to remove him,” West France reported, detailing the audacious act. The couple’s attempt to flee with their child was short-lived. Just four days later, they were apprehended by authorities on the Romanian border in Hungary.

Trial and Sentencing

The trial took place last Wednesday at the Nantes court, with the charges centering around “violence by their ascendant, leading to total incapacity for work for more than eight days and child abduction.” Notably, the parents, who now reside in Belgium, did not appear in court for the proceedings.

The court ultimately sentenced both parents to two years in prison, but the sentence was suspended. According to reports, the couple explained their actions were motivated by a fear that the foster family would ultimately adopt their child. This fear, while not excusing their actions, provides a glimpse into the complex emotional factors driving the case.

This case highlights the difficult realities faced by child protection services and the lengths to which parents may go when grappling with the potential loss of their children. The suspended sentence underscores the nuanced nature of the situation, balancing the severity of the offenses with the parents’ stated motivations.
