Funguamex: a foundation that provides educational opportunities to children with great potential

Funguamex is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of Guatemalan children and youth through education. Its mission is materialized in the Benito Juarez Rotary Educational Center CERBJan institution that offers high-quality, bilingual education to low-income students with high IQs.

The history of Funguamex began more than 25 years ago, driven by Dr. Jorge Prado, a Rotarian committed to improving education in Guatemala. His vision was clear: to create an educational center that would offer talented but economically limited children the opportunity to receive an excellent education. Thanks to the collaboration of several people, including the former Mexican ambassador to Guatemala, Salvador Arriola, the educational center opened its doors at the end of 1999. Today, after 24 years, the institution has benefited hundreds of students through the scholarship program “Opening Doors to the Future,” giving them access to an innovative methodology, cutting-edge technology, and a bilingual program in English and Spanish.

Impacting the lives of hundreds of children and young people in Guatemala

The Benito Juárez Rotary Educational Center began with 54 students in its first classes. Today, hundreds of students have passed through its classrooms, from Kindergarten to 5th year of Bachelor of Science and Letters. Many of them have managed to access scholarships to continue their studies at prestigious national and international universities. These achievements have been possible thanks to the strategic alliances between the Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur, Mexican and Guatemalan companies and entrepreneurs, and the Mexican Embassy in Guatemala.

The impact of the education provided by CERBJ is not only reflected in the academic achievements of its students, but also in the opportunities for personal and professional development that are open to them throughout their lives.

The story of Santiago Martínez, a CERBJ student

Among the many success stories that the Benito Juárez Rotary Educational Center has produced, one stands out: Santiago Martínez, a student who won a silver medal in the World Olympiad of Young Mathematicians WYMOThanks to the education he received at this school and the additional training provided by his teacher Alex Correa from the Cermat Academy in Mexico, Santiago managed to qualify for the final and represent Guatemalan talent with excellence in the competition held in Bali, in which children from 28 countries participated.

The institution offers partial scholarships taking into account the socioeconomic aspect and the academic results of the students. Those interested in enrolling their children in the Benito Juárez Center can fill out an online form through the official website: CER Benito Juárez Contact.
