SIA “Rīgas meži” has 13 fountains under its supervision – ten stationary and three floating, where Riga residents and guests of the city like to stay or meet friends in the summer. They provide aesthetic pleasure to residents and guests of the capital, as well as refreshment on hot summer days.

Due to climate change, our summers are getting hotter and longer periods of drought, so fountains are important for us not only as an aesthetic element of the urban environment, but also practically – as an opportunity to cool off.

Townspeople, especially families with children, like Riga’s biggest fountain – near the House of Congress and two fountains with pools on the Esplanade.

The pride of Riga – the oldest fountain “Gadalaiki” is located in the garden of Vērmanes. Its sculpture was made in Berlin and installed in 1869 and was the most luxurious decorative sculpture of its type in the city at the time. The original sculpture, which had suffered as a result of vandalism, had to be dismantled in 1972. Sculptor Mirdza Lukaža made a copy, which was installed by the municipality in 1978.

One of the most famous Riga fountains – “Nymph” – is located near the Latvian National Opera. This fountain, created by the sculptor Augusts Foltz in 1887, is an artistic monument of national importance. A bronze copy of the fountain’s sculptures was created by the sculptor Mirdza Lukaža in 1986, but the original is kept in the Rundāle Palace.

Also, the decorative pool in Grīziņkaln next to the “Lutausis” sculpture and the reconstructed Ziedondārza pool will delight and cool down adults and children on hot summer days. The flower garden also houses the renovated fountain “Frogs”, which was built at the same time as the park was established.

There is a fountain “Bastejkalnas cascade” near the City canal, the history of which dates back to 1880, but three floating fountains are placed in the canal itself.

The fountains are managed by the company “Rīgas meži”.
