This is the new South Central Metropolitan Area of the department of Caldas, in the Coffee Axis.
The cities participated in a vote this Sunday, November 26. It was a popular consultation to express their interest in forming or not forming the Metropolitan Area. In all municipalities, citizens responded affirmatively, except for Chinchiná, which rejected the offer.

The cities that will make up this new Metropolitan Area are: Manizales, Palestine, Neira and Villamaría.
The national registrar, Alexander Vega Rocha, was present on site leading the votes. The scrutiny was between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm this Sunday, and around 4:30 pm
The elected mayor of Manizales Jorge Eduardo Rojas stated in his X account that this territorial order will bring new discussions between said municipalities, such as advancing an Integrated Transportation System, in addition to the integration of a Metropolitan Council to discuss these issues.

“We must give the possibility to people from other cities in the Metropolitan Area to visit Manizales with a lower transportation cost. We also have to discuss the multipurpose cadastre,” said Rojas. He added that we also have to plan for the multipurpose cadastre and public services.
The national registrar indicated: “On Tuesday, after the scrutiny, the National Electoral Council (CNE) will define the creation of the metropolitan area with these 4 municipalities. This case is unprecedented in Colombia. We must celebrate the participation of citizens, more than 17% of citizens authorized to vote, that is, more than 72,000 of them were present at the polls.”
He also revealed that the Chocoanos residing in eleven villages of Riosucio (Caldas) approved to integrate into the new municipality of Belén de Bajirá. “Both processes are a triumph of democracy and citizen participation.” explained Vega Rocha.
The measure that determined the entry of the municipalities into the metropolitan block was to obtain 50% + 1 of the votes in favor of twinning.
Through a popular consultation, four municipalities expressed their interest in forming the Metropolitan Area in the department of Caldas.
