Early this morning, a tragic accident on the Santa Lucía highway in the province of Camagüey has left several people dead. This unfortunate event has shocked the local community and has generated deep sadness among the families and friends of the victims.
According to unofficial sources, there are five dead, although so far only four of them have been identified – reported by Cubanet News – (three by photographs). The accident occurred after the “Los Olivos” bridge, in El Carmen, leaving the beach, in an area known as “Las 80”. There are two seriously injured and one with minor injuries.
“It was a crash between two cars. One was leaving the beach and crashed into another that was parked on the opposite lane. According to what I was told, the driver went to urinate,” a source told Cubanos por el Mundo.
The car leaving the beach caught fire after the accident. Two of the women who were travelling in it died instantly. In the other car, a man – presumably the driver – and two other women also died instantly.
“The other passengers are in the hospital in Nuevitas,” said the source who claimed to have seen the car burning.
According to another source consulted, one of the cars was a rental vehicle and the other was a Renault brand.
According to information provided by local authorities and confirmed by CubanetThe accident occurred at around 2:30 am on a stretch of road known for its dangers. Adverse weather conditions and lack of proper signage may have contributed to this fatal outcome, although the exact causes of the accident are still being investigated.
At the time of writing this article, Cubanet had only been able to confirm the identity of two of the victims: Cliver Álvarez Mayo, 17, and Dailenis Silva, 19. Cubanos por el Mundo identified two others: Milagros Hernández Avilés and a woman known as “Yami, the mother of the twins.”
Cliver Álvarez Mayo, a young man of just 17 years old, was known in the community for his dedication to his studies and his spirit of solidarity. Friends and family describe him as a young man with a promising future that was abruptly cut short.
Dailenis Silva, 19, who also died in the accident, was a young woman with many aspirations.
Known for her joy and enthusiasm, Dailenis had recently finished high school and had plans to continue her education at university. Her friends remember her as someone who was always willing to help and had an infectious smile.
The third victim, known as “Yami” or “Yamilita” by her neighbors, was a dedicated mother and tireless worker. When she died, she left behind two minor daughters, orphaned twins.
Her death has left a profound impact on all who knew her. Her family, in the midst of their grief, remembers her as a person full of life, always willing to sacrifice herself for the well-being of her loved ones. The loss of Milagros has left an immense void in the community and in her family, who now face the difficult task of coping with her absence.
Although her full name has not been provided, her identity as a loving mother of two young girls has resonated in the community. News of her passing has sparked an outpouring of support and solidarity for her daughters, who now face a future without their mother.
The fourth victim identified is Milagros Hernández Avilés, known among her friends as “La Niña”. We have not been able to confirm Milagros’ identity, according to a photo that was sent to us.
Local authorities have assured that all necessary investigations will be carried out to clarify the circumstances of the accident. They have also requested the collaboration of any witness who can provide relevant information. In this regard, the community has shown a great spirit of unity and support, not only towards the families of the victims, but also in the call to improve the conditions of local roads to prevent tragedies like this from happening again in the future.
The tragedy in Santa Lucía has highlighted the urgent need for action to improve road safety in the province of Camagüey. Poorly marked and poorly maintained roads, coupled with adverse weather conditions, pose a constant danger to drivers. Authorities have promised to review and improve road infrastructure to prevent future accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
In these moments of pain, the community of Santa Lucía is united in solidarity and support for the affected families. Expressions of affection and comfort have not been long in coming, and vigils and commemorative events have been organized to honor the memory of the victims. This tragic event is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of unity and mutual support in times of adversity.
