An investigation was opened in Tunisia after the death of four people who had consumed adulterated alcohol. According to the spokesperson for the court in Medenine, in the south of the country, around forty victims in total were recently poisoned after ingesting the substance. A man suspected of supplying the alcohol was arrested by authorities.
Five deaths in 2021
Analyzes are underway to determine the exact composition of the substance causing this massive poisoning. The majority of poisoned people have already been able to leave the local hospital. However, some patients present more worrying signs. The latter were transferred to hospitals in Tunis, the capital.
This is not the first time that cases of adulterated alcohol poisoning have been observed in Tunisia. In 2021, five people lost their lives after consuming an alcoholic substance in the Kasserine region, in the center-west of the country. At the time, 25 people were hospitalized.
Much cheaper alcohol
The consumption of artisanal alcohol is common in certain working-class neighborhoods of Tunis and in certain remote regions where poverty and unemployment rates are high. This illegal alcohol is often much cheaper than drinks sold in stores, which explains its success among the population.
In 2020, 39 people were poisoned after consuming methanol in the Kairouan sector, a town located in central Tunisia. Six of them had died.
