The crime of human trafficking is on the rise

The Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV) warned on April 20 that the crime of human trafficking in the country is on the rise.

The organization denounced that criminal gangs recruit girls and adolescents to force them into prostitution in Venezuela and in other countries in the region such as Colombia and Peru.

According to the OVV, most of the victims are between the ages of 11 and 17.

The most frequent modus operandi to attract minors is to quote them in a certain direction with the offer to do modeling work; once in the place, they take away their documentation and force them to have sexual relations with the members of the gang.

Recently, Venezuelan security forces dismantled a criminal group dedicated to trafficking minors to Colombia. In the operation, two adolescents aged 11 and 14 were rescued.

Venezuela among the countries with less prevention against child sexual exploitation and abuse

The report published by the Economist Impact portal in March 2023 assured that Venezuela is the second country with the worst prevention of cases of child sexual abuse in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Of the 60 countries that are included in the Out of the Shadows index, Venezuela is ranked 47th globally, with a score of 43.8 out of the maximum possible 100,” the report said.

According to the information, in the country there are significant gaps in the legislation that protects minors from sexual exploitation and abuse.

The study presented by Economist Impact highlights that the National Action Plan against the Exploitation and Sexual Abuse of Boys, Girls and Adolescents has expired and there is no planning to launch it again. In addition, he recalled that at least 1,000 cases of child sexual violence were reported in the first six months of 2022.

“Explicit legislation is key to avoiding ambiguities regarding what constitutes a crime,” the portal insisted.

In his opinion, there is precariousness in the preparation of prosecutors and judges in charge of dealing with this type of case.
