North Sinai has long been the scene of an insurgency led by Islamist militants who have carried out numerous attacks, mainly targeting security forces and Christians.

The pace of attacks in the region has, however, slowed since February 2018, when the army launched a major operation in Sinai, parts of the Nile Delta as well as desert areas along the western border with Libya.
