Fourth time: Victor Urban wins election and continues to serve as Hungarian Prime Minister

by time news

At the end of a particularly charged election campaign in which the 6 opposition parties rallied against the incumbent Prime Minister Victor Urban, Urban’s Fides party won by a large margin with 53.5% of the vote, compared to 34.6% received by all six opposition parties. This is in addition to the fact that the party was elected in 88 out of 106 constituencies by direct election to parliament.

In his speech, Urban said: “We will remember this victory for the rest of our lives, because we had to fight a huge number of rivals: the local left, the international left everywhere, bureaucrats in Brussels, a huge number of institutions from Soros’ empire, the international media and the Ukrainian president.” We did not have to deal with so many rivals at one time “

“I do not want to hide my disappointment, my sadness”

The leader of the united list of the opposition “United for Hungary”, 49-year-old Peter Marki-Zai, responded to the loss: “I do not want to hide my disappointment, my sadness,” he said. “We all knew it was not a fair game. We recognize that Feeds won a huge majority of the votes. But we still doubt that these elections were democratic and free.”

The opposition needed a much better achievement than Fides to succeed in this election, when according to an economist’s analysis the opposition needed 56% of the vote to control parliament while Urban’s party could do so with only 43% of the vote.

Hungary is divided into 106 districts, each of which elects a member of parliament. An additional 93 seats are allocated to parties according to a unique formula, designed in a way that works well with Feeds. Parties that win by a large margin in district elections can get more seats – a move that is expected to increase Fides’ victory margin in parliament if the big wins in the districts drawn are realized in a way that gives his party an advantage.
