FPT Industrial Unveils Retrofit Solution too Power Trucks with Natural Gas in Latin America
FPT Industrial, a brand of the Iveco Group, is making waves in latin America with its innovative “Repower FPT” solution. This retrofit technology aims to transform existing diesel-powered heavy-duty trucks into cleaner, more sustainable vehicles running on natural gas.
Currently undergoing rigorous testing, six retrofitted trucks are being evaluated in Brazil and Argentina. Initial assessments are scheduled for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
One of the key advantages of Repower FPT is its ability to maintain performance parity with diesel engines. According to amauri parizoto, Commercial Director of FPT industrial for Latin America, the natural gas engines deliver the same torque and horsepower as their diesel counterparts. Drivers, therefore, can expect a seamless transition without compromising on performance.
“We utilize technology that allows the natural gas engine to match the torque and horsepower of a diesel engine. Essentially, the driver won’t notice any difference,” explained Parizoto.
Truck autonomy depends on the number of gas tanks installed. FPT Industrial cites an estimated range of approximately 350 km for a medium-sized truck equipped with a 6.7-cylinder engine.
The solution has already garnered meaningful interest from major fleet operators, especially those involved in bio-methane production. Ten companies have expressed keen interest in adopting the technology.
FPT Industrial is collaborating with Necta,a leading natural gas distributor,to ensure easy access to bio-GNV for transporters, further bolstering the sustainability aspect of the retrofit solution.
Presented at the Fenatran 2024 exhibition in São Paulo, Repower FPT represents an investment ranging from 230,000 to 250,000 reais (approximately €38,000 – €41,000), roughly one-third the price of a brand-new truck.
“when coupled with a bio-methane production facility, the investment can be recouped in less than two years. There’s no hesitation needed; it’s time to embrace this possibility,” stated Parizoto.
