Fquih Ben Salah: ONEE strengthens and secures the drinking water supply in the cities of Souk Sebt, Oulad Ayyad and Dar Oulad Zidouh

Béni Mellal – The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) proceeded, on March 6, 2023, with the gradual start-up of a major project to strengthen and secure the drinking water supply to the towns of Souk Sebt, Oulad Ayyad and Dar Oulad Zidouh, in the province of Fquih Ben Salah, from the Afourer treatment plant.

This major project, which is part of the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program (PNAEPI) 2020-2027, the agreement of which was signed on January 13, 2020 before His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, will secure the drinking water supply of the aforementioned cities and neighboring municipalities by 2035, benefiting a total population of 100,000 inhabitants, indicates a press release from ONEE received by MAP.

It will thus make it possible to compensate for the significant deficits due to the drop in the water table caused by the low rainfall that the region has experienced in recent years.

With a total cost of approximately 134 million DH, financed by a loan taken out from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the first phase of this project, which went into production on March 6, 2023, includes the supply and installation of 60 km of pipes connecting the Afourer treatment plant to the arrival reservoirs of the towns of Souk Sebt, Oulad Ayyad and Dar Oulad Zidouh.

The second phase of this project, which is scheduled to come into service in early 2024, concerns the extension of the Afourer treatment plant for an additional flow rate of approximately 16,000 m3/day, the reinforcement of the raw water pumping station and the construction of a new pumping station at Oulad Ayyad with a flow rate of nearly 3,400 m3/day, as well as the electrification and remote management of this supply system.

This major project will also contribute to improving the living conditions of the beneficiary populations and supporting the socio-economic development of the region, notes the same source.
