France: Elisabeth Borne appointed Prime Minister (Elysée)

Paris – Élisabeth Borne, Minister of Labor, Employment and Integration in the outgoing government, was appointed on Monday as Prime Minister succeeding Jean Castex, who presented the government’s resignation to President Emmanuel Macron earlier in the day, the French presidency announced.

“The President of the Republic has appointed Ms Elisabeth Borne as Prime Minister and tasked her with forming a Government,” said a statement from the Elysée.

His appointment comes as part of the government reshuffle following the re-election of President Macron for a second term on April 24.

She is the first woman to be appointed to this position since Edith Cresson, who held the post for almost a year from May 15, 1991 to April 2, 1992, under the presidency of François Mitterrand.

The handover with his predecessor is scheduled for the same day before 8:00 p.m., according to media reports.

Élisabeth Borne served as Minister of Transport in 2017, then as Minister of Ecology in 2019 and in the Department of Labor in 2020.

In 1990, she held the position of advisor to the Ministry of Education under Lionel Jospin, before being appointed prefect of the Poitou-Charentes region in 2013.

A year later, she joined Ségolène Royal’s office at the Ministry of Ecology, then became director of the Autonomous Paris Transport Authority (RATP) in 2015.
