Aitzol Iriondo, “Gurbitz”, who was the successor of Garikoitz Azpiazu, Txeroki”, at the head of ETA’s “military apparatus” has arrived in Spain, specifically at the Martutene prison in San Sebastian to finish serving his sentence.

In this way, only eight terrorists remain in two gala jails: Ainoa Ozaeta Mendikute; Javier Abaunza; Arkaitz Repair; the cited “Txeroki”; Iñaki Esparza; Luis Iruretagoiena; Mikel Carrera; and Fermin Martinez.

“Gurbitz” was arrested in December 2008 in a joint operation by the French Police and the Civil Guard. He was arrested in the French town of Gerde, in the High Pyrenees:

At the beginning of 2001 he joined the “legal” command “Hontza”. In June 2002 she joined the “liberated” command “Zelatun”, of the Donosti complex, together with Ohiana Baquedano Maidagan “Anne”. The latter was arrested on October 1 of that year, after which Iriondo fled to France, where he was taken in by the clandestine structures of the terrorist group.

Starting in July 2007, after the arrest of José Antonio Araníbar, it assumed its powers of supplying and training terrorist groups, and above all, in preparing attacks in Spain, using car bombs stolen and assembled on French soil. As the ringleaders were arrested, he rose up the ETA command pyramid, until he reached the “military apparatus.”
