4.8% of millionaires in the world were in France in 2022, according to the 2023 World Wealth Report published by UBS bank. A figure that would place France in third place among the countries providing the most millionaires in the world.

To perform this calculation, the report is based on three data: the size of the adult population, average wealth and wealth inequality. With 22.7 million millionaires, the United States has by far the largest number of millionaires in the world and provides 38.2% of the global total. Far behind, China ranks second with just over 6 million millionaires, or 10.5% of the world total.

But in 2022, Japan, which had held 3rd place since 2014, was overtaken by France. With exactly 2,821,000 millionaires, France provides 4.8% of millionaires in the world according to this report. France is closely followed by Germany (4.4%) and the United Kingdom (4.3%). Italy, the Netherlands and Spain provide them, about 2% of the world population of millionaires.

The ranking varies slightly if we take the population of the “very rich”, who own more than 50 million dollars. They are nearly 124,000 in the United States, nearly 33,000 in China and 9,100 in Germany. France (3890) is only ranked 8th this time.

A stable number of millionaires

Unlike the majority of developed countries and in particular the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany, France has not recorded, in 2022, a decrease in the number of millionaires on its soil. The development of France indeed contrasts with the evolution of the total number of millionaires in the world, which increased from 62.9 to 59.4 million between 2021 and 2022.

But France is also not one of the countries with the greatest increase in the number of millionaires in 2022, such as Brazil, Iran or Norway.

UBS, which publishes for the first time this report historically established by Credit Suisse, does not give specific explanations by country on these developments.
