ENERGY / DEPÊCHE – France has won the race against other European countries to host what will be the largest solar panel factory in Europe. A project considered of great strategic interest so as not to depend so much on China in the “energy transition”.

The president of Holosolis, Jan Jacob Boom-Wichers, confirmed last Monday the choice of France (and Moselle) during a business summit in Versailles organized by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron. The company says it chose France for “the know-how and availability of its workforce, the quality of its infrastructure” and also for “the low-carbon nature of the energy produced in the country”.

This project, which will cost 700 million euros and will create 1,700 jobs, is of major strategic interest because of the European decision to regain industrial sovereignty. “China is currently responsible for 80% of the photovoltaic modules installed in the world, compared to 3% in the European Union”underlines the company.

Due to the explosion of self-consumption, security of supply of solar panels at reasonable prices has become essential for many European countries.

The question is whether the new factory will be able to offer competitive prices compared to China. The company will manufacture panels for residential roofs, industrial roofs and agricultural roofs. The project involves Europe, which communicates around its REPowerEU plan, which aims to develop 600 gigawatts of solar energy by 2030.
