Time for the quarter-finals of this U17 World Cup in Indonesia. The French under-17 team faces Uzbekistan this Saturday, who fell to England in the round of 16 (2-1). France will play the quarter-finals for the sixth time, after 1987, 2001, 2007, 2011 and 2019, following the victory after the effort acquired on penalties against Senegal (0-0, 5-3 on tab).

Uzbekistan, for its part, represents the little surprise in these quarter-finals. Drafted among the best third-placed teams in the group stages, the “Oq boʻrilar” (The White Wolves), to everyone’s surprise, eliminated England in the round of 16.

The current 73rd in the men’s FIFA rankings is not his first attempt in the under-17 category. In 2011, Uzbekistan had already reached the quarter-finals of the U17 World Cup, in Mexico, before being eliminated by Uruguay, future finalist of the edition.

Before this quarter-final, the French team remains in turmoil around the case of Yanis Issoufou. The young Bleuets winger has been at the heart of an administrative imbroglio since the start of the week, due to his participation with Niger in a competition affiliated with the U17 World Cup. Burkina Fasso then Senegal requested the disqualification of France.

Playing for two different nations within the “same” competition is prohibited by FIFA regulations, which meant Issoufou did not appear on the match sheet during the round of 16 against Senegal. His presence for the rest of the competition remains uncertain.

The meeting between France and Uzbekistan will be broadcast in full this Saturday, November 25, from 9:30 a.m. on La Chaîne L’Équipe.
