France will not allow its athletes to wear the Islamic veil during the Paris Games next year, despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) tolerates it, the Sports Minister indicated this Tuesday. Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. In statements to public television France 3, the minister indicated that “the representatives of our delegations and in our teams will not wear the veil,” out of respect for the secularism that exists in her country.

Contrary to COI

Oudéa-Castéra recognized that this decision is contrary to the IOC doctrine, which addresses this garment as a cultural and not a religious aspect. French law does not explicitly prohibit the headscarf in sports competitions, although it does so for public representatives in the scope of their duties.

Each federation, which is governed as private entities, makes its own decisions regarding the headscarf. Football or basketball games prohibit it, while rugby, handball or tennis games authorize it under certain conditions.

Marta Hurtado, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner (United Nations Organization), rejected this decision of the French Government, advocating for the freedom of each woman to choose whether or not they want to wear the veil. “No one should impose anything on any woman,” Hurtado said.
