The revolution is underway in Ligue 1. French football could be a pioneer in the implementation of white cards after the recommendations of the International Football Association Board (IAB) on temporary 10-minute expulsions. Éric Borghini, the president of the federal referees commission, said he was in favor of this proposal.

“Rather than giving a definitive exclusion, especially at the start of the match, which unbalances an entire team, temporary exclusion for certain types of faults makes sense for the spectacle and for football,” he indicated in the columns of L’Équipe.

The IFAB, guardian of the laws of the game, recommended testing temporary exclusions in professional football on Tuesday at its annual meeting in London. An initiative aimed at repressing various misconduct by players (disputes, tactical faults, etc.) similar to that practiced in the world of rugby where yellow cards were introduced in 1999.

“If the LFP and the FFF executive committee agree…”

In 2017, the International Football Association Board (IAB) validated the implementation of temporary exclusions, with the aim of easing possible tensions on the pitch and improving fair play, in amateur categories, young people, veterans or even disabled people, subject to the approval of each national federation and confederation.

In France, temporary expulsion, namely a white card imposed on the offender, ordered to calm down for ten minutes, has been in force since 2018 in amateur competitions. “My feeling is that this temporary exclusion, which we already practice in certain leagues and certain districts, is interesting. The feedback I get, from amateur football, is rather satisfactory,” explained Éric Borghini.

Professional football is not currently affected by this measure, and this may therefore change in the future. Pierluigi Collina, president of the FIFA referees committee, who sits on the IFAB technical subcommittee, stressed that the testing of temporary exclusion in professional football could take place as early as next season , subject to the approval of the general assembly of the body in March.

“If the IFAB wants to entrust certain voluntary countries with an experiment in their professional competitions, France would be up for next season. Obviously, if the LFP and the executive committee of the FFF agree,” clarified the president of the federal referees commission, always for The Team. Note that UEFA is currently not inclined to this revolution. Euro 2024 or even the next Champions League will do without the white card.
