“Sometimes, just one word is enough to profoundly change a policy,” noted Mr. Boniface, who commented in a video posted on the IRIS website, on France’s new position on the question of the Moroccan Sahara.
In a message addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, it is recalled that the French President, Mr. Emmanuel Macron officially announced to the Sovereign that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara are part of Moroccan sovereignty”, while stressing France’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as “the only basis for achieving a just, lasting and negotiated political solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council”.
In this message, it is the term “the only one” that changes everything, noted the expert, recalling that until now France supported the Moroccan autonomy plan established in 2007, which now becomes, according to Paris, “the only plan” capable of leading to a definitive settlement of the Sahara issue.
This new position of France comes at a time when “Morocco has gained points on the diplomatic level”, notably with the United States and Spain or even the return of the Kingdom to the African Union which “has earned it other support”, underlined the director of IRIS, thus seeing it as “a new victory” for Moroccan diplomacy.
While welcoming Paris’ encouragement of French economic groups, “very present and very active” in Morocco, to invest in the southern provinces, the analyst is counting on the upcoming visit of the French head of state to Morocco to strengthen this dynamic.
