Francis in Najaf, historic meeting with Ayatollah Sistani

Time.news – Pope francesco is in the sanctuary city of Najaf, in central Iraq, where he will meet the Grande Ayatollah Ali Sistani, the highest religious authority for most Shia Muslims.

Najaf is the third sacred city for Shia Muslims after Mecca e Medina and houses the tomb of Ali, Mohammed’s son-in-law and cousin.

The program is for a private meeting between Pope Francis and the highest religious authority of the Shiites, the Grande Ayatollah Al-Sistani. It is one of the most important religious meetings in history.
