Rescuers in Baltimore are searching for six people after a container ship crashed into a major bridge in the city’s harbor early Tuesday, authorities said. This is an “active search and rescue” situation, the city’s fire chief said, and the number of missing could change.

Two people have been saved from the water so far, Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace said. A video shows the collapse of the 2.5-kilometer-long, four-lane Francis Scott Key Bridge after being hit by the boat. An official told CNN that conditions were unsafe for rescuers due to objects hanging from the structure, freezing conditions and limited visibility.

The bridge spans the Patapsco River and serves as the outermost passage into the Port of Baltimore. It is an essential link to Interstate 695, or the Baltimore Beltway.
