The Spaniard Francisco Ibez, creator of the comic characters “Mortadelo and Salaminho”, died this Saturday at the age of 87.

“With great sadness, the Penguin Random House Editorial Group announces the death in Barcelona of the great designer and cartoonist Francisco Ibez,” the publisher announced on Twitter.

Born in Barcelona (northeast) on March 15, 1936, the year the Civil War began, Ibez published the first story of “Mortadelo and Salaminho” in 1958.

Afterwards, Ibez created several other characters.

He was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit for Fine Arts in 2001.
