Franco Zeffirelli was born in Florence on February 12, 1943, son of Ottorino Corsi, a merchant from Vinci, and Alaide Garosi Cipriani. At the time the child could not be registered with any of the parents’ surnames, as he was born out of wedlock, so his mother invented the surname Zeffirelli for him, inspired by Mozart’s Idomeneo.
