A collection of little-known anecdotes and curiosities about Mel Brooks’ 1974 film starring Gene Wilder as Dr. Frederick von Frankenstein

It is Gene Wilder’s favorite film among all those he has made in the course of his long career, it is considered the masterpiece of director Mel Brooks as well as one of the cornerstones of comic cinema: let’s talk about “Frankenstein Junior” (1974, in original “Young Frankenstein »), The story of the grandson of the legendary Doctor Victor von Frankenstein, Frederick von Frankenstein (played by Wilder), who tries – in the castle that once belonged to his grandfather in Transylvania – to bring back to life an inanimate creature (Peter Boyle) with the help from busty assistant Inga (Teri Garr), wacky aide Igor (Marty Feldman) and mysterious Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman) whose name – a gag that has become a myth – makes horses neigh. The film, a parody of the films taken from the famous novel by Mary Shelley (above all “Frankenstein” of 1931 with Boris Karloff), was born from an idea of Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks (who wrote the subject and screenplay) and was shot in black and white. black with a photograph and a thirties style. In the year following its release it was blockbuster and had a great success also in our country. Much of the credit certainly goes to the Italian adaptation edited by Mario Maldesi, who tried not only to translate the dialogues into our language but to return jokes and puns such as the legendary “Lupu … ululà e Castellu … ululì” (in original ” There … wolf and there … castle “, linked to” werewolves “or” werewolves “pronounced shortly before by Inga and Dr. Frankenstein, translated as” wolf howls / lupulà “).
