Check-in, baggage drop-off, security control, boarding or lounge access: Passengers often have to show identification at the airport. In Frankfurt, your own facial features alone should be enough in the future.

Frankfurt/Main.

In the future, more passengers at Frankfurt Airport will be able to use their biometric facial features to identify themselves at checkpoints. On Thursday, the airport operator Fraport presented a technical solution from the service provider Sita, which was previously reserved for guests of Lufthansa and its affiliated Star Alliance (including United, Air China, Air India).

Fraport announced that Frankfurt is the first airport in Europe where this service is generally offered to passengers of all airlines. Concrete agreements with the first companies outside the Star Alliance are about to be concluded. “Our goal is to equip at least 50 percent of all check-in machines as well as boarding pass controls and departure gates with the groundbreaking technology in the next few months,” announced Fraport’s board member for infrastructure, Pierre Dominique Prümm.

The “Smart Path” offering from Sita and US technology provider NEC uses people’s individual facial characteristics. Ideally, at the checkpoints, your face will be scanned as you walk past, instead of checking ID documents, tickets or boarding passes every time. According to Sita, around 75 percent of guests prefer this contactless biometric process. However, conventional identification procedures should remain possible, the airport said.

Star Alliance passengers with Miles & More cards can store their details permanently, while other passengers can only register for the booked flight using their ID at specially set up machines. Fraport and Sita assured that the biometric data will be deleted three hours after the effective departure time. (dpa)
