Eintracht Frankfurt celebrated a goal-rich victory in Kiel. This puts Eintracht within one point of Bayern.
Eintracht Frankfurt celebrated a 4:2 (1:1) victory in the Bundesliga against promoted Holstein Kiel game and is moving closer to FC Bayern in the table. Led by double goalscorer Omar Marmoush, the Frankfurt team prevailed in an up-and-down game.
It was Marmoush who gave coach Dino Toppmöller’s team the lead in the 25th minute. However, just five minutes later, the Kiel team were able to equalize with a penalty from Shuto Machino. In the 47th minute, Frankfurt went back in front through Matanović, but the home team’s response was quick again: Machino scored his second goal and the equalizer again in the 50th minute.
But then Eintracht pulled away: Marmoush in the 65th minute and Tuta in the 74th minute finally put the guests on the winning path. The Kiel team couldn’t make a comeback.
Thanks to the success, Frankfurt is now in second place in the table with twelve points and is only one point behind FC Bayern. Kiel, however, is farther away from the bottom of the table with just one point.
Eintracht had big plans three days after the bitter last-minute equalizer in the Europa League in the 3-3 draw against Viktoria Plzen. “It will be exciting to see how the young team deals with it,” said Toppmöller and gave a clear route for the game in the far north: After the “small disappointment,” it is now “important to show a reaction.”
In fact, the Hessians were completely unimpressed by the setback on the European stage. Despite five personnel changes and the absence of striker Hugo Ekitiké (adductor problems), Eintracht had the game under control from the start, set the pace and rhythm and fully deserved to take the lead.
Because Kiel’s back line made mistakes again and again, Frankfurt’s attack department had a few chances – but missed further goals until the break. The agile Marmoush alone found his master three times in Holstein keeper Timon Weiner (16th, 45th and 45th + 1).
On the other hand, Kiel tried really hard, but initially didn’t get into the final third too often. This changed after the equaliser, which Lewis Holtby cleverly threaded through to Robin Koch. The hosts now had their best phase. Machino hit the crossbar – albeit from an offside position – and a little later he maneuvered the ball into the goal to supposedly take the lead, but there had been a push beforehand (36′).
Things continued to be similarly turbulent after the break. First Frankfurt scored after a corner to take the lead again, Kiel responded immediately. But the longer the game lasted, the more noticeable Frankfurt’s superiority became. Kiel was increasingly overwhelmed by the guests’ powerful attacking game. The goals inevitably came.
