Frankfurt had the game under control for a long time. After the restart, Gladbach suddenly became dangerous – but could not score a goal for Eintracht.
For Dino Toppmöller and Eintracht Frankfurt, the start of the new Bundesliga season is going according to plan. SGE celebrated a comfortable 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, their third win in four league games. While Frankfurt is in third place, Gladbach is going deeper and deeper into crisis. The “Fohlen” suffered their third defeat.
Hugo Larsson gave Eintracht the lead after 30 minutes. Teammate Omar Marmoush scored the final goal shortly before the end (80th minute).
Frankfurt’s chest was puffed out after their recent victories against Hoffenheim (3:1) and Wolfsburg (1:2): “We want to be very active,” coach Toppmöller said before the match on Sky. “If we play with great passion, we will attract that to our side.”
A plan that initially worked, at least in part: Frankfurt was the more active team from the start, pushed Gladbach hard and had significantly more possession of the ball. Two promising free kick opportunities (5th and 14th) were unsuccessful, and their attacking efforts often lacked the final consequence.
The fact that the first real chance did not result in the lead was due to unfortunate circumstances: Marmoush’s attempt, intended as a shot on goal, landed on the head of the surprised Hugo Ekitiké, from where the ball flew just past the empty goal (25′).
Five minutes later, it was in the net: Ekitiké crossed from the left, Ansgar Knauff won the header and Larsson slotted in for a deserved lead. The visitors had hardly been present up to that point in attack – and even after falling behind, there was no real comeback.
Gladbach’s Nathan Ngoumou started the second half with a solo effort and a shot into the arms of Kaua Santos (46th minute). A gentle “Hello, wake up!” call for his team, who suddenly stepped on the gas – and became increasingly dangerous. First it was Ngoumou again who was thwarted by Santos (58th minute), shortly afterwards Rocco Reitz hit the post (67th minute).
Ekitiké missed the chance to make it 2-0 on the other side (63′), but apart from this exception, the now strangely passive Frankfurt team were literally outplayed. SGE hardly had any moments of relief – but one of the few led to the decision.
