STORY – Sandra Torres, once married to the head of state, has taken a conservative turn to distinguish herself from Bernardo Arévalo, son of Guatemala’s first elected president, who is leading the polls.

Through the roads of Guatemala, we see only one face: that of Sandra Torres. Placarded in all departments, all villages. The candidate of the National Union for Hope (UNE) party, wife of former President Alvaro Colom (2008-2012), is running this Sunday for the fourth time in the presidential election. Coming from the social democratic camp, she has taken a conservative turn and hopes to become the first woman to preside over this country of 17 million inhabitants ruled for twelve years by the right, plagued by poverty, violence and corruption.
At 67, this woman from Péten, one of the poorest departments, is a veteran of politics and can count on a well-honed partisan apparatus. In 2011, during her first candidacy, she divorced to run for the presidency. The Supreme Court rejected his candidacy. But Sandra Torres hung on. She made it to the second round in 2015, 2019 without winning.
