In the late evening of August 1, the account “Kaunas public transport mapa” that appeared on the social network Facebook says that on the occasion of the 14th birthday, passengers are offered a new card valid for 6 months without restrictions for all types of transport. It costs 2.35 euros. The offer is valid for the first 500 people until August 5th.

On August 2, the municipality of Kaunas issued a statement and stated that this account is in no way related to the company “Kaunas Buses” or to the city municipality that manages it. Residents are urged not to click on the link, as this way criminals seek to steal people’s personal or bank login data.

The text contains even untrue facts – Kauno bus company has been operating for 14, not 90 years.

On June 27, the account “Kaunas public transport card” appeared on the Facebook social network, offering to participate in a simple game and win the “Žiogas” card of “Kaunas busses”, which gives the right to use the city’s buses and trolleybuses for free for a year.

If you didn’t win even once, you could try again and after a few tries the “lucky” box was opened.

Then the account visitor was offered to open a special link and pay a one-time fee of 2 euros for the services. After starting the payment procedure, the fee increased to 3 euros, but it was not possible to complete the transaction – a message about the interrupted payment appeared on the computer screen.

At that time, the general director of the Kauno Buses company, Mindaugas Grigelis, announced that the company’s employees themselves noticed the fake account on the social network.

They immediately understood that the fraudsters were only masking themselves in the name of the company, because “Kaunos bussai” did not carry out any promotions during which cards are issued for free and the opportunity to use public transport is provided for free.

Mr. Grigel testified that he had no idea who was trying to harm the company.
