Free Electronic DNIs Now Available for Vulnerable Populations in Peru

Peru’s National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC) is expanding access to free electronic identification documents (DNI) for specific groups, aiming to bolster inclusion and streamline citizen services. The initiative, currently focused on 11 locations within Lima, provides crucial identification to those who may face barriers to obtaining it. This move comes as RENIEC works to reduce wait times and improve accessibility during peak procedural periods.

Expanding Access to Digital Identification

The Peruvian government, through RENIEC, is prioritizing access to electronic DNIs for minors, older adults, and people with disabilities. This targeted approach reflects a commitment to ensuring all citizens have the necessary documentation to exercise their rights and access essential services. A RENIEC statement indicated the entity has activated measures to strengthen inclusion and bring registration services closer to citizens.

Geographic Focus: Lima and Future Expansion

Currently, the free electronic DNI program is being implemented in 11 strategic locations throughout Lima. While the initial rollout is geographically limited, RENIEC has indicated plans to publish a list of beneficiaries and potentially expand the program in the future. The agency is actively working to reduce queues during the summer months by opening additional strategic points for processing applications.

Benefits of the Electronic DNI

The electronic DNI offers several advantages over traditional paper identification. It provides a secure and convenient method of identification for a wide range of transactions, including accessing government services, opening bank accounts, and verifying identity online. This digital format is particularly beneficial for vulnerable populations who may have difficulty carrying or protecting physical documents.

Addressing Accessibility and Efficiency

RENIEC’s efforts to reduce wait times and improve accessibility are particularly important during peak seasons. By opening strategic points and prioritizing vulnerable populations, the agency is working to ensure that all citizens can obtain the identification documents they need in a timely and efficient manner. According to reports, RENIEC is also preparing for potential beneficiary access in 2026.

This initiative represents a significant step towards a more inclusive and digitally empowered Peru, ensuring that all citizens have access to the identification they need to fully participate in society.
